The Council of the Regions of October 18, 2020 has doped the motion to maintain the sessions of the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Indeed, since March 2020, the plenary sessions of the European Parliament have not been held at the seat of the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Seven plenary sessions of the European Parliament were missing in Strasbourg, the European capital. The Regions of France are therefore concerned, alongside the Grand Est Region, about this critical situation which endangers the European democratic system. The European Parliament, the only community body elected by direct universal suffrage, guarantees good democratic representation of European institutions.-------------------------------------- By taking the decision to hold its plenary sessions in Brussels eight months ago, the European Parliament has sent an extremely negative signal to Member States and to European citizens. The regions of France, all political sensitivities combined, are now calling for the responsibility of France and its President of the Republic. France's response must be strong and vigorous. To erode the presence of the European Parliament in Strasbourg today amounts to attacking a symbol of European unity. As such, the Regions of France strongly regret the decision of the European Parliament to organize the first plenary session of the European Parliament in October "empty", without MEPs being able to meet in Strasbourg or even in Brussels. This attack on European democracy weakens France and its Regions in their European ambition.----------------------- Despite the sanitary conditions, the decision to hold plenary sessions of the European Parliament in Strasbourg should not be optional. The Regions of France call on the French State to take all the necessary measures to provide health guarantees to MEPs, and strongly reaffirm their absolute determination in favor of the Strasbourg statute, and their desire to vigorously defend the seat of the European Parliament by France, in Strasbourg. The Regions of France intend to show as much as necessary their investment, always more resolute, in favor of the influence of France within the European institutions. Source: French Regions
